What is IT doing to help ESU go Green?

IT is an active member of the ESU sustainability committee, and is committed to implementing ways to support sustainable efforts, reducing waste, and reducing the carbon footprint at Emporia State University. Below are just a few of the ways that IT is contributing to ESU's efforts to a more sustainable future:


Operations & Infrastructure


  • Server Virtualization - Over 70% over ESU's servers are virtualized. Our IT staff continue to build a robust infrastructure that utilizes fewer physical servers. By using fewer physical servers, our university saves more than $100,000 per year in energy and equipment costs!
  • Data Center Best Practices - IT has implemented many data center best practices to reduce our reliance on HVAC usage. We use methods such as Hot/Cold aisles, cable management, and specific device placement to reduce the amount of air conditioning needed, thereby reducing our carbon footprint and reducing our energy costs.
  • Remote Management & Alerts - Our IT staff have implemented tools to remotely manage and maintain our campus servers and network equipment to reduce the amount of time spent in our data center.
  • Digital Repositories & Scanning Systems - IT continues to work with both administrative and academic offices to implement scanning solutions to promote the use of digital repositories. Not only does this increase the effficiency of data processing and access to university information, it also reduces our reliance on paper records! 

Desktop Computing


  • Energy Efficient Desktops - ESU purchases energy-efficient desktop and laptop computers to reduce campus power consumption. 
  • Energy Efficient Desktop Settings - IT has implemented mandatory sleep settings on all desktop computers as they are configured for campus use. By adopting this practice, campus units can save an average of $50 per computer annually, vs computers being left on 24x7 (there are over 2,500 computers on campus).
  • Lab Management Software - IT has partnered with all departments on campus to implement a lab management solution. This lab management solution ensures that lab computers are not left running when not in use. It is estimated that the university has reduced it's energy usage by over $50,000 per year by ensuring lab computers are turned off during non-use hours.
  • Volume Purchasing Management - Volume desktop and laptop computer purchasing saves our university more than $100,000 per year!
  • Desktop Lifecycle Management - IT works with university departments to maintain Desktop Computing Equipment Lifecycle Management to lower our total cost of ownership of desktop computing.
  • Remote Assistance - Our IT staff utilizes remote assistance utilities to reduce emissions and cost for supporting our university's satellite offices.
  • Virtual Desktops & Kiosk Solutions - IT continues to pursue the use of smaller footprint desktop computers that can utilize a virtual desktop experience. These desktop kiosks consume a fraction of the energy used for a full desktop computer and deliver the same functionality!

Campus Printing


  • Lab Printing Best Practices - IT continues to work with departments across campus to implement Lab Printing Best Practices. Best Practices include using IT-recommended laser printers, using automatic duplexing, rather than single-sided printing, reducing the percentage usage of toner for basic print jobs, including a recycling bin next to all printers, and instituting print-release stations. 
  • Waste Reduction Printing Solutions - IT has partnered with multiple labs on campus to implement different waste reduction printing solutions. Waste reduction printing solutions include Print-Relase stations in smaller labs that use BYOP (Bring Your Own Paper), and authenticated solutions (PaperCut) in larger labs, such as the William Allen White Library.
  • Office Printer Consolidation & Inefficient Printer Removal - IT continues to work with individual departments to reduce unnecessary and wasteful printing by promoting the use of centralized network laser printers, and the reduction of individual office Inkjet printers. This has proven to reduce both ink and paper usage in departments!
